Is comparison finally coming to Australia?
Captain Compare has heard on the grape vine that car insurance comparison is finally becoming a reality in Australia. The UK and USA have both had quite mature comparison websites whilst Australia has been missing out. Not for much longer! Stay tuned for more updates.
Finding a good car insurance price
When you are researching your car insurance, most experts claim that what you need to look for is a good set of product features at the best possible price.

Merry Christmas and please drive safely
Each Christmas holiday, there are many road deaths. Please don’t be one of them! Drive defensively, be prepared for accidents and idiot drivers, don’t drive your car tired and be sure to always stick to the speed limit. This will increase your chances of surviving the holidays without injury and without having to make a car insurance claim!
Why is Australian car rental insurance so confusing?
So you’ve searched for car rental prices from Avis, Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Europcar or you’ve compared some prices on VroomVroomVroom, and you’ve noticed one frustrating thing… They all say that insurance is included, however there’s an option to pay even more for insurance. Let me tell you what this extra insurance cost is all about. Car insurance actually is included in ALL hire cars in Australia, however, they come with a high excess, usually around $3000. This excess cost is a little too high for some people so you are given the option to reduce this excess to around $300 for just under $30 per day including taxes. It is entirely up to you if you wish to reduce the excess and you shouldn’t feel pressured into making a decision on the day. This information is important if you are given a free rental car from your insurance company while your private vehicle is being repaired.
To make matters worse, television shows like A Current Affair and 60 Minutes love to attack car rental companies and their insurance policies. The most recent story was about how a man had to pay for damage to his rental car, even after he paid for insurance. The truth was he ran a red light which means he broke the law and hence, was not covered. The television show neglected to mention this clearly.
Green car Insurance.
This website is now carbon neutral. This means, the more you use it, the more you’ll be helping the environment. Many people don’t realise that it takes an ample supply of electricity to keep the internet running. Just viewing this one page takes at least 5 computers to be turned on all day every day. Then there is your own computer and the screen that you are viewing this text on. So, just like the auto industry is attempting to become more environmentally friendly, so is the internet. CaptainCompare is already paying for the carbon offsets when you use this website. In the near future, we’ll be paying for your car insurance to be environmentally carbon neutral also. What we want to know is, who is going to organise insurance for our planet?
Safe Driving tips
Every year, too many people lose their lives on the roads and police and rescue crews hate clearing up dead bodies. Driving over the speed limit, improper lane changes, losing control and alcohol consumption cause approximately 60 per cent of the fatal collisions. Statistics from auto insurance companies can also confirm these figures. See our new page for safe driving tips
Bingle?
It’s what happens when someone crashes in to your car. It’s also the name of a new car insurance company that is underwritten by AAMI. Although their website looks a little too 2002, their business model has potential. However, we have no feedback on the quality of heir customer service yet.
Looking for Website owners and Bloggers
Do you own a website or a blog? If so, send me a story about the worst accident you’ve ever seen or been in and I will send you $100. I’m doing this to help share experiences with people about accidents that happen on the roads. This will help raise awareness about the dangers of our roads and help educate people of how important car insurance can be when they need it.

November 2007
There’s some fantastic end of year sales coming up soon so if you’re in the market for a new car, so some people often sign up for insurance BEFORE they drive their new car home. Some insurance companies have a instant “over the phone” product that you can purchase so that insurance will save you on your way home. You’ll need to check with the car insurance company for details. People are now looking to purchase smaller cars. For this reason, lager cars will probably be selling cheaper.

The January customer survey results are in! 5% of our customers in Australia have performed or attempted to do a burn out in their lifetime. We find that hard to believe and were expecting it to be much higher. Perhaps it is because they know if you’re doing a burnout out at the time of an accident, your car isn’t insured and you’ll have to pay for any damage yourself. It would be interesting to see the results if the test was done on a non insurance website.
1st February 2006

Australia is lucky enough to be able to get good quality car insurance from companies such as RACQ, RACV, NRMA, Suncorp and QBE.

Captain Compare has been watching the new car deals at the moment and shiver me timbers, he likes what he sees. There’s some fantastic deals from Ford, Holden and Mazda. It’s another round of FORD Vs HOLDEN, fighting it out for the best deal. Holden are offering for $32,990 a special edition Commodore SVZ which comes with $6000 of extras. Ford has a similar deal for a similar price with $7000 worth of extras. Ford vs Holden thing has been a long long battle, but they’re both pretty damn good cars so simply choose one which feels the best when you take them for a test drive. Oh, and remember to get a cheap auto insurance quote from CaptainCompare after you purchase your car.
Welcome to Captain Compare discounted car insurance. Feel free to browse around to learn more about auto insurance or get an instant online quote with one of the well known companies on our website.
Okay, so I’m not the best speller in the world. It’s amazing how many people can misspell a simple phrase such as comprehensive car insurance. After conducting a little research, here are some of the horrific misspellings that we’ve seen:
- comprahensive car insurance
- comprehensave car insurance
- comprehensive car insurence
- comprehensive car insurents (yes, it’s true! Also… insurants!!!!)
Crazy huh?
Is it worth making a $500 insurance claim if the excess is $400? Let us know what you think here. Email richard (at) captaincompare.com

Auto insurance tip #43
Most new car buyers simply sign up to the same car insurance company as their parents. Don’t give in to tradition! Some car insurance providers know this and hence love you for the easy sign ups. Don’t let the apple fall far form the tree and be sure to shop around before selecting auto insurance for you.
Do you know of an insurance broker in your area? If so, we’d like to speak to them. Tweet me or something!
RACQ Insurance
In Queensland, RACQ is really starting to push advertisements about their popular car insurance products. To find out more about them, see our RACQ insurance page which briefly explains what they have to offer. They are one of Brisbane’s most well known insurance companies and many people are very happy with their service.
NRMA Car Insurance
NRMA is one of Australia’s largest car insurance companies. If you haven’t heard of them then you probably haven’t driven a car before! Find out more about NRMA’s insurance policies on our NRMA page. I’d like to see some more creative television advertisments for NRMA. More of the NORMA please. Insurance Claim Tip #2 from the Police
If you are ever unlucky enough to get into an accident, be sure to get details of the other driver and a 3rd party witness. If you want to be sure, phone the police to come out so they can file an official report. It will ensure you’ll be covered properly and the other driver won’t be able to to dodge responsibility.
Heavy Hail season not over
We’ve all seen some pretty heavy electrical storms this year. Hail, lightning, small floods have been something we’ve all seen or heard of. Is you car insured for damage from these natural thugs? Find some motor insurance for your precious car by Comparing insurance companies
Party hard, drive safe – don’t void your insurance
Captain Compare would like to wish everyone in Australia a very safe new years eve and would also like to remind you to be safe when driving. As always, the police will be out in force this new year so don’t drink and drive. Not only will you cop a hefty fine and have your drivers license revoked, but your insurance is considered completely void if you are even remotely over the limit which can mean thousands or even millions of dollars you’ll be responsible for.
